Import Duty & VAT:
If you're buying items from another country and having them sent to you in this country then you will have to pay import duty and VAT.
1. Import Duty is worked out as a percentage of the purchase value of the item. The purchase value includes not only the cost of the item, but also postage and any insurance that you pay for.
2. The percentage of duty you pay is different for different categories of import. Not sure what this would be for sharp weapons, but for sporting weapons, blunts, protective clothing etc, the duty is 2.7% for other clothing e.g. period costume it's 10.8%.
3. VAT is currently 17.5% and is worked out on the purchase value plus the duty.
For example: If you've ordered a swept hilt rapier with schlaeger blade (a sporting weapon), for just £100. including postage and packing, then it would actually cost you £120.67. £100. + 2.7% = £102.70 + 17.5% = £120.67.
For more information about customs and excise see the HM Customs & Excise website.
Postage & Packing:
This is going to vary quite a bit depending upon how quickly you want your order and how big/awkward it is. But for a standard delivery of 10 days - 4 weeks, you can expect to pay about £15-£20. for an average weight rapier.
