Foolish Optimism

It’s a bright and sunny morning in the north of England, and I’m looking out over my garden with a cup of tea before I start work for the day, work for the moment still being a computer set up on my dining table in my lounge.

But as much as I would enjoy talking about my garden, and my plans for the year ahead, I actually want to focus on something else in this post.

What I wanted focus on, were those things that give us hope for a better future, not just for us personally, but for wider society.

Quiet musings of an Urban Englishman.

I’d like to say this website has been created with some fine or amusing notion in mind, but the truth is altogether more prosaic…

The Duellist is an old website and domain which I’ve owned since the early 2000’s to help promote an interest I had in classical fencing and western martial arts. In essence the different forms of playing around with swords, from rapiers and sabres, smallswords and even singlestick that dominated from the 16th century in Europe onwards, to the countless heavier and more arcane sword varieties that herald from earlier times.

However, as with many things, as my time became more limited and other websites appeared with a similar focus, I finally decided to retire my old site, retaining the domain purely for the associated email hosting which I still use to this day.

Somehow over ten years have slipped by since I stopped maintaining this site, I’ve developed a number of new interests, and while I intend to keep this domain for my email hosting, I also feeling like I should do more with the site itself, and hence, for now at least, the musings of an Urban Englishman is born…
